bag review: proenza schouler PS1 medium satchel

My obsession with this bag started about two years ago and its appearance in magazines and blogs has further fuelled my infatuation. The Proenza Schouler PS1 satchel is one of those bags that has reached cult status. With the different types of material used and the new seasonal colours, I was itching to get my hands on this bag!

So, when I travelled to Hong Kong last Christmas, stopping by at Lane Crawford and admiring the PS1 satchel was one of my top priorities! I initially had my heart set on the mustard version as yellow is my favourite colour and the darker tone will be a great addition to my wardrobe. But because it was a past season colour, it was no longer available at Lane Crawford. Instead, I opted to take home this bold and vibrate Sunshine version.

This chartreuse leather version in this high-voltage hue, without a doubt, stands out and adds a striking pop of colour to any outfit. The bag measures 33 x 23 x 11 cm with a handle drop of 8 cm has an adjustable detachable shoulder strap that measures up to 91 cm.

On the front of the bag, there is a layered leather flap front with a metal flip-lock closure and belt detailing. Opening and closing the bag is relatively hassle free as the flip-lock closure is easy to use with one hand, especially while the other hand is kept busy with a cup of coffee or shopping bags!

This bag has several different compartments. The main compartment is fully lined and has an internal zip fastening pocket where you can find the Proenza Schouler logo. There is also a front compartment that is kept shut with a magnetic snap-fastening and two zip-fastening pocket which can be found in the front and the back. The hardware for this version is burnished gold and is designer-stamped which adds small and subtle detailing Ii.e. on the zip and strap hook). It’s these small little details that makes me love this bag so much!

Another feature that won me over is the bag design. Majority of the time, my bag is only used to hold my wallet, phone, keys and camera. But then there are days when I have to carry around a lot more stuff. As you can tell from the photo below, the bottom of the bag can expand, meaning that it is capable of carrying more items without jeopardising its shape and the look of the bag.

Although I love my bag, there are a few cons that I have to mention. Firstly, the length of the shoulder strap is not long enough for some people to wear the bag as a cross body, especially if they are of a taller stature. This does not bother me, as I prefer to wear the bag off the shoulder rather than across my body. Secondly, if you use the bag to carry heavier items, I would suggest that you reframe from carrying the bag via the top handle. This is because the weight drags the bag down and by holding on to the top handle, you are pulling the top flap up, hence creating an awkward/strained look at the front of the bag (please see below and excuse the lighting). Lastly, if you buy a light colour version of the PS1, I have to warn you that it is prone to colour transfer. When I take this bag out, I always give it a wipe with a moist cloth when I get home.

I truly adore this bag, and even though my choice in colour is prone to getting stained, I have no regrets. My usual attire is not very colourful, so my adding a pop of colour, it injects life in to my usual boring clothing choice!
